Our laboratory studies development & plasticity in the neonatal brain following hypoxic-ischemic injury. We utilize translational & clinical research models to uncover injury mechanisms and determine their relationship to subsequent functional outcomes. Techniques include cellular, molecular and systems neuroscience, as well as advanced magnetic resonance imaging in human newborns. Our goals include:
- Understanding basic mechanisms of cortical plasticity during normal development and following early brain injury.
- Defining mechanisms of selective vulnerability in the developing brain.
- Evaluating interventions that optimize repair & recovery following injury.
